Explore Tahquamenon Falls

The Falls are nestled in the Tahquamenon Falls State Park in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Located only 14 miles west of Paridise, Michigan, off of M-123.

Close to 40,000 acres and 13 miles of nature's wonders, Tahquamenon Falls is a must see.

The Upper Falls is nearly a 50 foot drop and close to 200 feet across. It has a dark almost rootbeer color to it, due to all the iron in the water.

There is a short hike down a paved path to the observation deck located at the top of the waterfalls. If you choose to, you can brave the stairs to the bottom of the falls for a unbelievable view.

The Upper Falls is believed to flow more than 50,000 gallons per second (glad We do not have that water bill,) and known to be the second largest falls east of the Mississippi. My guess at the largest would be Niagra Falls.

Upper Falls

There are two ways to get to the Lower Falls. One is a 4 mile hike through the forest along the river or you can drive there. My suggestion is to have someone drive while you walk if at all possible.

The Lower Falls are my favorite. There is a series of 5 smaller waterfalls, that can be viewed from the shore. Or do like we did and rent a rowboat and row out to the island for a much more exciting time.

Once out on the island, you can walk around, play in the Tahqamenon River, get right under the Falls, and just have a great time.

That is what Jim & I (A'Lona) are doing in the Pictures below

There is camping at the Lower Falls if you choose to stay, so you can maybe do some more hiking the following day. There are more than 25 miles of hiking trails located within the park.

Tahquamenon Falls State Park is open year round, so lovers of all seasons will have their time to enjoy it. For Spring and Summer there is fishing, camping, hiking, canoeing and much more. For Fall, there is the beautiful color change which is unbelievable. For the Winter lover. there are several marked trails for snowmobiling and skiing.
